If you happen to be one of those who are residing Canada, or if you are going to live there anytime soon, you must know everything about the Employment Insurance (EI). Started by the Government of Canada, the EI program offers many benefits to those who are temporarily out of work.
A team of experienced immigration consultants at Continental Immigration Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd discusses some of the benefits that an individual living in Canada is entitled to under the EI program.

For a regular income: EI lends financial support to those who have lost their job without any fault, such as mass lay-offs or seasonal work shortage. The applicant may avail the benefits of EI program the moment he or she becomes unemployed. It is advisable to file for claims within four weeks from the last working day to stand eligible for the benefits. Only the individuals who have made a contribution in the EI program and have been employed for a minimum of 420-700 hours in the last 365 days can claim the benefits.
It is important to note that applicants who have no valid reason behind quitting the job or has been fired because of a valid reason are not eligible to avail the benefits of EI.

To avail parental benefits: EI provides maternity benefits to women who are unable to work because of pregnancy or child birth. It could be a biological mother as well as a surrogate mother. Also, the program offers parental benefits to the couples who cannot work temporarily in order to take care of a newborn or a newly adopted kid.

For support in sickness: Applicants may also avail the benefits of EI program in case they are unable to work because of an illness. A legal medical certificate validating the applicant’s poor state of health is mandatory to avail the benefits.

For compassionate care benefits:An individual may also claim the benefits of EI program if he cannot continue to work or needs to be away from work temporarily in order to take care of a severally ill family member or a closed one on the deathbed. The benefits can be availed for a maximum period of 26 weeks.
